The Bafang mid drive ebike kit is hands down the best bang for you buck when it comes down to performance, reliability and power. These kits are easy to install, however you need to know a few things before your order your mid drive motor. Below is a check list to make sure you get the right motor for you! Be sure to check out our install guide or feel free to drop me an email.
Important details about this it before ordering.
1. There are two main Bafang mid drive cadence sensing motors. 750W motor BBS02B produces 120nm of torque and is an excellent option for normal everyday riding whether it is trails or mountain biking. If you are needing a little more power, maybe 30% more to be exact, the BBSHD 1000W model produces 160nm of torque, more robust, larger cooling fins to dissipate heat quicker and produces more peak power. The BBSHD is the "heavy duty" version of its little brother and would be better suited for harsher rides, hunting, businesses, or any other scenario that requires a heavier duty motor. With that said the price point of the HD system is a little more expensive and typically comes in around $200 more than the 02.
Keep in mind, the BBS02 can run 52V battery but it is typically recommended to stick with 48V battery to conserve the life of the controller. In order to receive the additional power benefits from the BBSHD system you will definitely want to use a 52V battery. The price difference of 48V to 52V is marginally different but there is additional cost for bumping up the power. You will need to sit down and do a cost vs benefit analyst and decide which motor works for you. Personally, I have a BBS02 with a 52V battery and am very content with this set up. I will in the future need to bump down the amps in the future to conserve the controller.
2. You need to know your bottom bracket size, this information can be looked up usually on Google with brand name and model. Most standard/older bikes come with 68/73 threaded bottom bracket, some newer mountain bikes (Trek Fuel EX for example) come with a press fit bottom bracket such as bb92 (you will also need this adapter for PF92) and some fat bikes have a 100MM OR 120mm bottom bracket. Make sure you are getting the correct motor size shaft for your bottom bracket housing! You will need bike related tools in order to install this such as this kit. All Bafang kits are highly recommended to have an additional sensor called gear shift sensor, which prevents the motor from turning during shifting saving your driveline.
3. Choosing a donor bike, if you already have a bike then you should be good to go. Bafang kits work best when installed on a bike with gears. I do not recommend installing Bafang kit on a single speed bike, those bikes would be better suited with hub drive. It is best to keep the Bafang kit on bike with 7 to 10 gears in the rear, these chains typically tend to be stronger than 11 and 12 speed chains.
4. Chainring sizing - the smaller the number the more low end you will have (think more torque, less top speed), higher the number the more high end speed you will have (less torque, more top end speed). If you are unsure, 44T chainring would be a good start, you can always change this later on.

The most popular mid drive motor on the market. 750 Watts 48v system is powerful enough for anything you want to throw at it. Available bottom bracket sizes 68/73, 100, and 120mm. Formally know as 8fun.
Starting Cost: $495
Just like its little brother BBS02, the BBSHD is that, HD heavy duty model. This motor is beefier with extra large cooling fans, higher output, 52v system and higher torque 160nm. Also available in 68/72, 100, 120mm
Starting Cost: $749
Little bit pricier than the Bafang models, but more torque and more power options. These motors work well with mountain bikes with a low down tube and tucks up better than the other mid
drive motors.
Starting Cost: $1,050
CYC version of the Bafang BBS02 (more or less). This model has torque sensing freewheel unlike the Bafang which uses cadence sensing
Starting Cost: $950
Another Torque sensing motor but much less expensive than the CYC motor. Available 250, 500, and 750 watt with bb size 68/73 (100MM not available on Amazon right now)
Starting Cost: $349
The other more common motor is the hub drive motors. This type of motor can be easily installed and does not require as many special tools as you are only replacing either the front or rear wheel (you will need freewheel removal tool). My personal preference is rear wheel replacement, especially if you happen to ride on any wet or loose surfaces. Hub drive motors can be just as fun as mid drive motors and can actually in some cases be slightly faster. Typically mid drive motors have more torque but some hub drives have more power output and can surpass speeds of a standard stock mid drive motor.
You will have a little more "baggage" as hub drive its come with a controller that needs to be stored somewhere, typically attached to the bike or in bag attached to the bike. The controller is a lot smaller than the battery and can be stored anywhere as long as it connects to the cables coming from the hub motor. There are several options when it comes to hub motors and the power ranges typically can go higher than your typical mid drive motor. You have the option of running front and rear hub motors with a dual controller for a more advance option, but keep in mind all these kits add up in price the more you add.

There are many options when it comes to batteries. Two brands I personally use and purchase are Unit Power Pack and CAO. I would say these are quality middle priced batteries.
You can either have frame mounted batteries or a loose battery pack. Both have disadvantages and advantages but it really depends on the frame you are attaching the battery to. The frame mounted battery packs come with a mount and typically can be mounted either on the bottle cage mount (top side or bottom side of the down tube) or it can be mounted on a rack either front or rear. Your loose battery pack will need to go in a bag either mounted on the frame, on a frame or in a backpack with a extended power cable.
Make sure you pair the battery with similar voltage. 48v systems with a 48v battery. The exception is the BAFANG BBS02 can run 48V and 52V batteries, with the other motors you will need to check with the manufacturer on which battery is best to use if you decide to use something outside of its voltage listing. The second number you will see is ah, amp hours. This is how long your battery will run on a single charge. This is all completely up to use of the bike, throttle, tempature, and many other factors. On a 48v system with a 13ah battery you can expect 25-35 miles on a single charge with normal use. The higher the number the longer battery life.
Some Ebike battery charge cycle exceeds 1000 times, life expectancy of up to 5 years
48V suitable fo 1000W/750W/500W motors as well as 52V option. Hard exterior shell with a mount that will mount to most bottle mount screw holes. Can be removed or charged on the bike. Includes lock and key to secure to bike to prevent theft and addition security to keep on bike.
